Thursday, January 22, 2015 At 1738 hours, Engine 61-2 and Rescue 61 were dispatched to Valley Mill Road in Baltimore County Md for a reported chimney fire. First arriving units arrived on location to find a house with a working chimney fire, down a long steep, unplowed driveway. No apparatus could make access to the house, so water cans, ladders and all equipment had to be carried up the driveway to the house. Crews from 61 and other company’s worked to extinguish the fire that had spread, into parts of the 200 year old house. Crews used water cans to hold the fire in check until a 4wd engine from Hereford Fire Company could get back the driveway. Crews refilled the water cans in the kitchen sink and used a bicycle pump to pressurize them. Once the 4wd from Hereford made it up the driveway a handline was stretched and the fire was extinguished. Crews operated for 4 hours before returning home.
