At 2:01pm Shrewsbury Volunteers and Rose EMS were dispatched for a reported accident with injuries on Interstate 83 NB at milemarker 2. Rescue 61 responded and while enroute was advised a single vehicle possibly struck by a tractor trailer and pushed into a guardrail just prior to the northbound rest stop. As Rescue 61 was arriving York County 911 advised Pennsylvania State Police were on location and advising the patient is in the driver seat unable to get out. Personnel from Rescue 61 and MICU 58 quickly assessed the incident, advised there is entrapment and asked for two additional engines for manpower.
The patient was in the driver seat unable to move his lower extremities. Personnel on location established a safe working area and removed the roof, B post and passenger side rear door to provide access to remove the patient. Engine 58-2 (Rose Fire Co) and Engine 451 (Maryland Line Fire Co.) arrived and assisted in removing the patient from the vehicle. Once out the patient was placed into MICU 58 and then transported to York Hospital Trauma Center.
Pennsylvania State Police investigated the incident and PennDot assisted with road closure. All units cleared the incident by 3pm.
