At 08:27 Shrewsbury Volunteers were alerted to assist Baltimore County units with a report major accident on I83 SB at Milemarker 35. Initial reports were a truck had exploded and multiple cars were involved. Rescue Squad 61 responded and information on the call was updated. The report now is a tractor trailer down an embankment and on fire with reported entrapment. Multiple units from York County were alerted ( additional from Shrewsbury, units from Rose Fire Co. and Eureka Fire Co. ). Rescue Squad 61 arrived and assisted Baltimore County unit already operating. The driver of the destroyed tractor trailer was removed in critical condition. We extend our wishes for the best of that driver and express a “Job well done” to Baltimore County personnel for pulling the driver out while under fire conditions. The driver was flown to Bayview Burn Center in Baltimore, MD by STAT Medivac after being treated by EMS personnel from PA and Maryland.
Rescue Squad 61 and Engine 61-1 provided personnel, tools and equipment to contain the fuel spill and other duties assigned. Good job to all agencies on location. At the time of this post I83 NB is open and flowing. I83 SB is closed in Maryland at Exit 36 for a three mile detour.
