At 05:55 Shrewsbury Volunteers along with mutual aid departments were dispatched for a reported structure fire in Shrewsbury Borough. Engine 61-1 and Rescue 61 responded and on arrival observed a two story home with nothing visible. Chief 61 (Myers) established Shrewsbury Command and crews investigated. The owner stated an office in the basement had smoke in it. Crews made entry and observed a slight haze but no fire. The mutual aid departments en-route were canceled and the investigation continued.
Firefighters began checking every appliance in the room. While the source could not be found the odor did not go away telling firefighters something is still smoldering. Firefighters began a systematic search of the room and after approximately 35 minutes an electrical outlet located behind a set of book shelves was found to be malfunctioned. The outlet itself was melted as well as the outlet cover and the plastic box in the wall. Crews were able to remove the electrical outlet and secure the electrical service to that device. Investigation further confirmed no fire traveled past the wall outlet box.
Shrewsbury Volunteers cleared the scene a 07:05.
