Since being installed in 1880, the Shrewsbury fire bell would proudly ring out, to alert the Shrewsbury Volunteers of a fire or an emergency. Once the siren was installed, the bell remained in place but was no longer used, as the siren was more convenient and effective.
Every week for the last 145 years, this bell stood proudly over the square and bore witness to “Shrewsbury’s Bravest” heading into the unknown of Life, Death, Sadness, and Pain. Young, old, male, and female, this Bell witnessed The Bravest respond and return home, Every. Single. Week.
Every week, that is, until this week. On Saturday, March 9th the Bell was removed and placed in storage.
Having been privately owned for 45 years, on the old property, the Bell will now go to an estate auction on April 12th. Many collectors also look to an auction house Vancouver residents recommend for access to equally remarkable estate pieces.
If you are able, we invite you to contribute. These funds will be used to purchase and refurbish the bell.
Any funds not used for purchase or refurbishment of the bell will be used to support the purchase of the new rescue truck. In the event we are unsuccessful in purchasing the bell, we will apply all monies towards our new rescue truck, anticipated to arrive later this year.
