At 5:03pm Chief 61 (Myers) was contacted by York County 911 and advised there are people trying to rescue 6 ducklings out of a storm water grate on Mt. Airy Rd in Shrewsbury Borough. Southern Regional Police are enroute and it was asked if the fire company can assist. Chief 61 went enroute and requested Rescue 61 with manpower and tools. On arrival people were standing along a busy roadway trying to see what they could do. Shrewsbury Volunteers made a lane safe to operate in and established contact with the wayward ducklings. The grate on the storm water drain was removed and a firefighter bravely approached them. We weren’t sure if they were jumping for joy or trying to escape however all 6 ducklings were placed in a bucket and removed from the drain. While this was occurring Momma Duck was hovering overhead and waiting to be re-joined with the family. The ducklings were taken across the street to an area with a stream and released.
Shrewsbury Volunteers wishes to thank the Southern Regional Police Department for the assist. Happy summer everyone.
