This evening members of Shrewsbury Volunteers and Eureka Volunteer Fire Department got together to go over each others rescue vehicles and sharpen our extrication skills. Personnel from each department reviewed each others rescue tools (Hurst and Amkus) and specialized equipment such as Shrewsbury’s grip hoist. We discussed techniques for extricating victims from damaged vehicles. These techniques included non-rushed extrication and rapid extrication (when the patient is in critical condition and time is limited). Safety for the victim and the providers were stressed while familiar and not-so-familiar extrication methods were practiced. Everyone got some worth while “tool time” and learned several ways to do door removals, roof displacement, dash movement and other extrication skills. Members from both departments had a good night of training and brotherhood. It was another step to assure seamless operations on the emergency scene when we work together for the common goal….. saving lives. Aside from firefighters, nationwide fire watch guards also help protect neighborhoods from fire disasters.
